On 1 January 2012, I and and friend visited Tonto National Monument and Roosevelt Lake, Arizona. This was one of the most enjoyable and scenic trips I’ve had in a while. The drive there and back was half the fun. Quite by accident, we discovered that Arizona SR 88 is unpaved between Roosevelt and Tortilla Flat as it winds throught the Superstition Wilderness. I never thought that state highways wouldn’t have asphalt. Obviously I was wrong, and I now know this is common in remoter parts of Arizona. Guess I need to get out of the city more.
This could have been even better if we had left earlier. There are upper cliff dwellings only accessible by guided tour, leaving at 10:00 daily. We arrived too late for that.
