Fort Bowie National Historic Site

On Sunday, April 22, 2012, we went to the Fort Bowie National Historic Site. This was not my first time here; the previous trip in 2009 is documented on the old photo pages. Getting there is about a two-hour drive east of Tucson, followed by a 1.5-mile hike into the actual site of the old fort. Along the way we passed the site of the infamous Bascom Affair, a stop on the Butterfield Overland Mail, and a former military cemetery still containing the remains of (among others), Medal of Honor winner Orizoba Spence. This area is so historically significant due to the presence of Apache Spring, in Apache Pass, once a strategic route through southern Arizona.

The visitors’ center at the park closed after we arrived. But thanks to a kind park ranger, we were allowed back in anyway!
